Two of my VERY favorite bouquets ever were made last June!! (Happy Anniversary, K&D and M&D!!)

The bride’s bouquet is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE piece to design when it comes to wedding flowers!! It is the most photographed floral element at a wedding and next to their spouse, it is the one thing the bride holds closest! 😉

I put extra time and attention and obsession into every detail of the bridal bouquet, knowing it is such a prized focal point for the whole wedding day! If I am told the bride has a favorite flower, I try to include it in the bouquet (providing I can actually get it in. #flowershortageprobs)!

I, personally, like a more whimsical, wildflower look to a bouquet. With main, focal flowers tucked in making their front and center debut and some fun filler flowers extending out to create depth and movement! (The wiggle is everything, IFYKYK!!) And my favorite is a chiffon ribbon tied at the stems with the ribbon ends hanging! And BONUS if the ribbon is one of the main colors instead of traditional white or cream!

But don’t just take my word for it! See for yourself!!

It’s no lie that I love flowering for weddings! But I also really love attending weddings!! Everything is just so beautiful, and hello?!?!… There’s cake!

Last year, I had the pleasure of creating wedding flowers for a young man I had known since he was 3 years old! And then, I got to stay for the fun!

Marleena and Caleb said “I do” on May 22, 2021 on the beautifully wooded property of some family members! The bride’s father made their arbor. It was a unique house-like structure that the mother and father of the bride then intended to use in their backyard/garden! (Um, I totally LOVE this idea!) I got to create a gorgeous asymmetrical floral spray on one side with some white drapery to create such a romantic backdrop!

The color palette was dusty rose with whites, greenery, and light pinks! I also got to make the bride’s stunning bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, boutonnieres for the men, corsages for the moms, some eucalyptus chair sprays, and a floral spray to sit across the couple’s table! I loved the romantic forestry fairy tale vibe of it all!

The only part I don’t love about being a guest at a wedding I have flowered for is how uber focused I am on the floral pieces throughout the whole ceremony and reception. I’m such a perfectionist so I’m basically staring down each floral piece the whole time begging it not to move an inch or droop! Good thing the DJ was pumping my jams cos I was eventually able to just stay on the dance floor for the remainder of the night!

Since we are 10 days out from Berkley and Max’s wedding, I want to reminisce a bit on the romantic bridal shower that was thrown for Berkley back in February!

Being Winter still, they wanted to stick with a romantic jewel tone vibe. You know, something to warm your soul in this cold month!!

I love everything about this theme! Dark and moody florals with a touch of dusty pink for romance and gold accents. SWOON!!

I made several centerpiece arrangements to line the long table where guests would sit. Greenery and candles sat in between each floral arrangement. Sweet bud vases sat on high top tables. A rose piece was set on the top of the bar where Rosé was served. And my favorite, my absolute Chef’s kiss, is the greenery and a spray of flowers affixed on the mantle and on the winding staircase!

Everything about this event was so dreamy and romantic.

And I simply cannot wait to flower their wedding in just 10 short days!

I love being a part, through flowers, of so many events in one’s lives!

Spring has (finally) SPRUNG!!!!!

In case you haven’t noticed, I like to post my monthly blog on the 19th of every month (#favoritenumber) but I had to be a day late this month in order to celebrate the arrival of Spring!

I get so excited seeing the tufts of daffodils scattered randomly in yards. And I immediately run to all the pastel flowers!! The warmer weather and days with sunshine and daylight lasting longer makes me feel alive again!! (just like all the beautiful spring blooms starting to come alive again! I am literally a flower!)

Now if only we could figure out a way for the pollen not to send us all into a tizzy!

This shoot was a fun little event with what I like to call my “dream team” of vendors! The talented Stephen Carbone of Carbone Photo Co. at the camera and using his incredible studio space: Carbone Studio located in Ashland, VA. And the ever creative minds and talents of makeup queen (and secret styling/design star!) Nicole Laughlin and hair queen Ashley Sanchez, both of The Beauty Soiree. Our beautiful model was Kayley Scott.

And this bouquet is one of my very favorites I’ve ever made! Palms and bunny tails and Pampas grass give me my little Boho fix! Scabiosa and Anemones are two of my very favorite flowers! Wax flowers are such a sweet, delicate touch and that hanging green amaranth gives the bouquet such a unique look! And Lavender and Peach are HANDS DOWN my favorite pastel color combo of all time!

Here’s looking at you, Spring!

February 19, 2022

Let’s talk about Valentine’s Day!

The Super Bowl for florists! (And how fitting that it fell the day after the actual Super Bowl this year!)

I am a big supporter and purchaser of locally grown flowers! But here in Central Virginia, not a lot is blooming in mid February. So it’s hard to encourage flowers for Valentine’s Day when I know I have to purchase the flowers to be shipped. But, I LOVE spreading and sharing LOVE so I want to be a part of surprising deserving partners and loved ones with flowers on this day of love! What’s a floral designer to do?!?!

I don’t push and market much for Valentine’s Day and that’s intentional. My clients that typically order from me will reach out to me if they want to gift their loved ones with flowers and I will gladly create a beautiful arrangement for them for this cutesy holiday! I like to keep it simple with a few different sizes of “Designer’s Choice” bouquets. This basically means I select the flowers to make the bouquet. They will be the prettiest, best blooms in pinks, whites, purples, and a few pops of red/burgundy that speak to me when I go to purchase!

This year I chose some of my very favorites: Snapdragons, Anemones, Lisianthus, and Scabiosa! And then I grabbed some greenery and fillers as well as Tulips, Carnations, Stock, and some Roses and Spray Roses. (Truth Bomb: I DO NOT enjoy the typical dozen rose bouquets!! They just seem outdated and too expected for me! However, I did have a few requests this year for those. I like to spruce it up a little. Get fun colored roses, change up the filler from the typical baby’s breath.)

There’s a lot of time, effort, and preparation that goes into preparing for Valentine’s Day. I had plenty of snacks, water, and coffee on hand to get me through! I am exhausted (even 5 days after the fact!!) but grateful!! I love spreading love through flowers!

BONUS: It was my sweet Shop Dog, Hershey’s birthday on Valentine’s Day so it’s fitting she was right alongside me for the whole thing!!

January, 19, 2022

It’s January!! A month I love solely because my birthday falls in it! (the 31st, so don’t delay on buying my gift!!) 😉

But other than that, it’s cold and gets dark early here in Virginia. And it’s kind of a lull after all the hub-bub and busyness of the holidays. I look forward to resting and recouping and starting anew. But I feel it can be hard to really get going with all of the aforementioned factors.

I always need a little pick-me-up throughout this month.

And since I am unabashedly drawn to color, I wanted to be reminded of this fun photo shoot we did with some of my VERY FAVORITE “friendors” (wedding vendors that have become friends!)

Nicole, a talented creative and makeup artist and owner of The Beauty Soiree Co. dreamed up a bright and colorful vision with lots of mixed media prints to set the tone for this shoot and Stephen, an incredible photographer and the owner of Carbone Photo Co. captured every stunning detail!

It is no secret that I am a sucker for color!! You want the rainbow? Perfect!

I created several pieces for this shoot: a bouquet, pocket square boutonniere (an absolute FAVE!), centerpiece arrangement, a show stopping floral piece, and cake flowers!! …and making every single piece brought me so much JOY! You try to be sad seeing all this bright beauty!!

Adorn your table where loved ones gather.

I created this phrase when promoting my Thanksgiving Centerpiece arrangements. I just liked the ring of it!

Also probably because few things make me happier than to be in a space with and surrounded by my loved ones.

I am thankful for a lot in my life. And I wish it didn’t take just one season/month,/holiday to reflect on it. Sure, I have moments where I think, “Ah, I am truly grateful!” but I feel like around Thanksgiving time I take extra stock in thinking on all the things that I am trul, heartfeltly grateful for….

  • Grateful for my partner that loves, supports, provides, and encourages me.!

  • My son who is so caring and giving and thinks about the solidarity of his future!

  • My family that provides comfort, support, and laughter!

  • My #shopdogs who bring unconditional love, friendship, and joy!

  • The ability to truly be doing what I love. And being able to successfully run my own business!

  • My customers who support and trust me with their floral hopes, visions, and ideas and to share them with the people they care about!

  • Being a part of such a huge moment in a couple’s lives when they choose me to create floral pieces for their wedding day!

  • The floral community I find myself a part of with local flower farmers and other designers in my area!

  • Getting to see the progress I’ve made and continue to make in my designs and business!

Here’s to you and hoping you can take some moments to truly reflect on what you are grateful for in your life! We have a routine at dinner time where we each say the favorite part of our day. Because there is good in every day! (Yes, even no matter how bad the day may go!) Find the good in your day, your week, your month, this holiday season… May we always be THANKFUL!

My love to you and your family!

Last month I started freelancing with Amanda Burnette Floral.

I thought the idea of freelancing would be a great way to integrate myself amongst my floral peers as well as learn a lot about running a floral business (she’s been doing it for about 10 years) and design techniques and mechanics. And it has offered me that and so much more!

I have found that I truly love freelancing. (Almost as much as if it were my own company’s event!) The knowledge and creativity and design techniques and mechanics I have learned through my experience thus far have been leaps and bounds beneficial!

Here are just a few things I have gained and learned from my experience so far:

The tricks of using smilax (a perfect vining greenery).

Experienced some really popular and beautiful venues I’ve never seen before.

Better recipes for arrangements.

Design techniques for a unique style bouquet.

Different boutonniere alternatives.

A better way to make a floral crown.

Creative takes on typical wedding flower setup.

That I need some freelancing help in my business.

Different varieties and color options for flowers.

Wholesalers and hard good suppliers.

So many different mechanics to use to bring a design to life.

More about my local floral industry.

That we as floral designers go through the same struggles and triumphs.

Connected with more local flower farmers.

Great friends and comrades in the industry.

And seriously so much more!!

I don’t know that I can honestly put into words how incredibly beneficial this opportunity has been for me! So instead, I’ll just show you some pictures of the work I’ve gotten to be a part of as a freelancer for Amanda Burnette Floral. (This design work was created and executed by Amanda Burnette of Amanda Burnette Floral. I helped to create any pieces under her expertise, guidance, and ideas.)

I absolutely look forward to more freelancing with Amanda and other designers!

And holler at me if you, yourself, would be interested in freelancing with me for some of my events at Pappy June’s Bouquets!

When I first started my business, I thought “This is it! I did it! I made my dream happen!”

One thing I’ve tried to incorporate into my life and into my business is to never stop dreaming and to be really intentional about goal setting. I have goals for the week, for the month, and for the year. I have a vision board to help remind me of the huge and attainable monuments I want to accomplish in my business! And recently, I got to cross off one of my lofty, out-there, big-time goals— my work was published in a magazine!

And not JUST published…. MADE THE FRONT COVER!!!

The whole thing came together like kismet. I was contacted by my dear friend, Nicole, owner of The Beauty Soiree here in Richmond, VA about doing some wearable floral pieces for a stylized shoot with our sweet friend and talented photographer, Jaemie of Jaemie Hillbish Photography (also in Richmond, VA). I love doing stylized shoots, not only does it give me great content for my website and the ‘gram it gives me a chance to be creative and work with my beloved “friendors” (other wedding industry vendors who become great friends. The model for this shoot is also an amazing friendor of mine: Ashley Sanchez).

A few weeks prior to the shoot I had watched a tutorial on floral tattoos by the super talented Susan McCleary (AKA “PassionFlowerSue”), which is a type of wearable that gently adheres flowers directly to you. Honestly, they’re very cool and I really wanted a chance to try them out! So, when I was approached for this photo shoot and said they wanted a floral headpiece I suggested we do a floral tattoo as well! The shoot went over great! I ended up making 2 headpieces, 2 floral tattoos, and 2 floral rings (because those are just so darn cute!)

When Jaemie showed me her pictures after the shoot, I was BLOWN AWAY!! I mean, flowers are already pretty! But seeing beautiful Ashely with those eyes done up by Nicole and the lighting and editing that Jaemie perfected made them POP like I couldn’t even dream of! So, I was beyond stoked when, about a month after the shoot, Jaemie let me know that the photos were being published!!

It still feels so surreal to me! I remember tearing images out of magazines when I was younger so I could keep them as a reminder, or use for inspiration. If an image resonated with me, I had to tear it out and keep it! Images are powerful and I love the idea that someone out there may tear a photo of my work out as their inspiration. As something that speaks to them!

But, let me assure you, I won’t be tearing these pages out, but I did buy my own copy to have as a memento. As a proud trophy! (My mom and siblings all bought a copy too!!)

The one thing that is bittersweet about this monumental moment, is that my name is not credited on the publication. Somehow, it got missed. I had my moment to mourn. But then I quickly remembered, MY WORK IS IN PRINT! So, it’s now a goal for the next time I get published to see my name properly credited! “Florals: Kyra Tanner of Pappy June’s Bouquets”!

While I still have you hear, another dream/goal of mine is to make one of those “BEST OF” lists! And I was recently nominated on one for LNN USA. You can vote for me under the category number 86. Florist at lnnusa.com between now and September 30th! (one vote per device! So get out your work computers, smart phones, laptops, iPads, your kid’s/grandkid’s/pet’s devices….)

Here’s to many more dreams and goals accomplished!

August 19th. 2021

At the precipice of a changing season, I am always, always, ALWAYS, ready to jump into what comes next. Especially now in the stifling heat of August, I catch myself daydreaming about crisp mornings with warm coffee, the trees dotting the mountains in reds, oranges, and yellows, and Pumpkin Spice EVERYTHING. (Yes, I am “one of those”!)

In the flower business, everything comes in seasons. Peonies are followed by snapdragons, which are followed by lisianthus, then chamomile, then rudbeckia, which brings us to this time of zinnias and sunflowers. While you can order flowers out of season from a larger commercial greenhouse, most of the time you work with what you got when you’ve got it. (Thanks to those amazing flower farmers out there!) So it’s a rare treat when I get to make an arrangement that feels a little ahead of its time and creates that feeling of that next coming season.

At the end of July, I did the flowers for the beautiful wedding of Brittany and Ben at Pocahontas State Park. Brittany’s vision was a little rustic and boho-y with wood platforms and mason jars for the centerpieces with red, burnt orange, purple, and mustard color flowers. Creating the arrangements in my studio felt like fall to me but once everything was set up in the wood-paneled reception hall, everything came together for a bit of a retro 70s vibe meets summer camp cabins (which was super fun too.)

I made an arch arrangement for the altar which featured chocolate sunflowers, craspedia, celosia, marigolds, pink roses, red gerbera daisies, purple lisianthus, amaranth, and lots of eucalyptus. These colors and textures made me so ready for apple picking and pumpkin spice lattes BUT until then, I’m trying to enjoy these last few weeks of sun and poolside margaritas. And I guess that won’t be too hard. 😉

We’re taking it back today, y’all…

Happy 3 year anniversary, Tammie and Dan!

I was incredibly honored to have been a bridesmaid in this wedding but ALSO, I am forever grateful to this lovely couple that believed in me enough to try my hand at being a wedding florist for the very first time!! (However, I don’t quite recommend being both a bridesmaid and wedding florist at the same time as it can be quite a busy and hectic day! – especially while healing from a fractured ankle!)

Three years ago, I was beginning to take my love of flowers really seriously and I was taking the first steps to make this passion into a business when one of my oldest friends asked if I would want to do the flowers for her wedding.

I’ve known Tammie forever, she was my sister’s best friend in high school and as the little sister, I tagged along on a lot of their adventures. Tammie and I became close ourselves when we worked at the mall together, at the mall’s customer service desk in our hometown of Chambersburg, PA. (We must have really done a number on that little kiosk because, while the mall still exists, the customer service booth does not!)

She met Dan in Chambersburg and they started out as “just friends”. Until they weren’t! 🙂

When Tammie asked me to be a bridesmaid and asked to do the flowers for her wedding, I was ecstatic.  She was getting married in our hometown at a local church and having the reception at a beautiful banquet hall called The Orchards. When I asked what her vision was for the flowers she told me to run with it and get creative. I did a trial run and sent the bride and groom some pictures which helped them realize what they DIDN’T want! After finding some inspirational pictures that caught the couples’ eyes, they sent them to me and I had a clear picture of their colorful vision! (Allow me to step up on my soapbox here: Pinterest boards and inspiration pictures are FANTASTIC reference tools! While your day won’t be an exact replica of the pictures you find, it gives your wedding vendors an idea of where to start and where to go with aiding in bringing your vision to life!)

Being my first experience as a wedding florist, it was a little overwhelming at the start! I wanted to make sure everything got done on time and was perfect! (I am QUITE the perfectionist!!) But once the wedding was underway everything clicked into place for a perfect day. I ended up using a lot of bright colors in her flowers! Lots of orange, green, pink, purple, and yellow! These pops of color really complimented the navy blue bridesmaid dresses! Bud vases of these colorful flowers were the centerpieces on the tables at the reception in which one person from each table got to take home with them! (I had several people tell me that those flowers lasted almost 2 weeks in their homes! WIN!!)

Color just brings so much fun! And I love how the flowers just POP!

Happy Anniversary, Tammie and Dan!

I know I’ve told you a million times and will continue to, but THANK YOU for trusting me to be your wedding florist! I am where I am today because of the opportunity you provided to me!

June 19th, 2021

The old saying goes that “If you get married in June, you’ll be a bride all your life.” Well, if you’re a wedding florist in June it feels like your whole life is at weddings. This month I’ve had the honor of providing flowers for four beautiful weddings (and a Beatrix Potter themed baby shower!) It’s been a whirlwind! Also at the beginning of the month, Pappy June’s Bouquet’s hired it’s first employee!

With so much change and growth, I thought now would be a good time to kick off our blog so you can keep up with all the exciting things happening over here. I shared a little about me on my “About” page, but for introduction sake, I’m Kyra (pronounced “Keer-Rah”) and I’m the owner of Pappy June’s Bouquet’s. I have 9 favorite flowers (favorite number, not to mention it’s so hard to pick just one when you’re surrounded by so many beautiful blooms!) and when I’m not putting together floral arrangements, I love to frequent all the coffee shops!  My assistant, Ellie, works with me most days of the week and her favorite flower (this week) is chamomile! We’re often joined in the shop by my dogs Kizer and Hershey, I’m not sure what their favorite flowers are but they do love to inspect the flowers on flower processing days.

We provide floral design services throughout Virginia and Pennsylvania (my home state) and are willing to travel just about anywhere to bring flower dreams to life! We provide flowers for all occasions, however, I especially love providing wedding flowers! (Bridal bouquets are my very favorite piece to make!) I love talking with brides about their vision for their wedding days and making something special. One of my favorite things I was able to make this month was an alter spray for a bright and colorful wedding. In this arrangement, I used snapdragons, strawflowers, yarrow, and roses to make a full and vibrant piece. I love to experiment with different colors and textures in an arrangement, and do whatever I can to make a client’s vision possible. Creating beautiful floral designs is my passion and I would love to make something magical for you!
